Opportunity Fund is a federally-funded program that provides employment assistance to individuals with a self-identified disability to support them in a successful return to work or training

Who is this program for?

This program is geared to support individuals who:

  • require assistance to prepare for, obtain and maintain employment or self-employment
  • self-identify as having a permanent mental or physical disability
  • are unemployed or under-employed
  • reside in central Alberta and are legally entitled to work in Canada
  • are not in receipt of Employment Insurance
  • have little or no labour force attachment

How does the Opportunities Fund help persons with disabilities?

The Opportunities Fund program helps individuals to prepare for, obtain, and maintain employment or self-employment. It offers a range of activities that can be tailored to meet the individual needs of persons with disabilities to facilitate their integration into employment. The Opportunities Fund also provides financial assistance for training, self-employment, wage subsidies and adaptive or assistive equipment.

Is the Opportunities Fund for me?
  • This project is available to persons who self-identify as having a permanent disability and who:
    • reside in Central Alberta and are legally entitled to work in Canada
    • have little or no labour force attachment over the last 5 years
    • are not in receipt of Employment Insurance
    • are not eligible for Employment Insurance programs and services
    • require assistance to prepare for, obtain and maintain employment or self-employment
What type of funding is available?
  • Through the Opportunities Fund, you may be eligible to receive funding for one or more of the following:
    • skills upgrading or tuition for short-term training to obtain employment
    • one-time costs that are directly related to employment (e.g., specialized clothing, applications, tools, transportation etc.)
    • adaptive equipment or assistive technologies that is required for employment or training
    • wage subsidy to provide financial reimbursement to employers who want to hire and train eligible job seekers
    • Income support and assistance to start a small business
